In thisreport, the term euthanasia will signify the medical administrationof a lethal agent to a patient for the purpose of relieving thepatient's intolerable and incurable suffering." (p. 2230)

Other sourceshave defined euthanasia variously: "The act or practice ofpainlessly putting to death persons suffering from incurable conditionsof diseases." (Wolhandler, 1984, p. 363), ". . . torefuse unwanted medical treatment or to have ongoing care withdrawneven though the patient will die if treatment is terminated."(Adams, et. al., 1992, p. 2021). Euthanasia is a general termthat can actually mean a variety of different things dependingupon the context in which it is used. For this reason, a numberof supporting terms have become the convention when discussingeuthanasia. These terms help to narrow the subject matter anddistinguish between different types of euthanasia.

If anonymous sources are used, or the publication is offered exclusivity, especially stringent requirements must be imposed on the critical evaluation of the sources. Particular caution should be exercised when dealing with information from anonymous sources, information from sources offering exclusivity, and information provided from sources in return for payment.

The Seattle Timesmade effective use of anonymous sources when it published a story saying BrockAdams, then a U.S. senator, had sexually harassed several women over a periodof 20 years. The investigation began after Kari Tupper, a congressional aide, publicly accused Adams of having drugged and molested her. Although Tupper tookher story to prosecutors, no charges were brought because the federal districtattorney concluded the case had no merit. The Times, however, started gettingphone calls from women who reported similar experiences with Adams but did notwant to be publicly identified.
