Scientists asked children and adults wearing 3D glasses to compare two slantedsurfaces and judge which is the “flattest”, given perspective and binocularinformation separately, or both together. It was not until 12 years thatchildren combined perspective and binocular information to improve the accuracyin their judgements, as adults do. A numerous progeny was reckoned a great blessing to a man; to have his table surrounded with children, as olive plants; to be encircled with a large family was a crown of glory (e); and to live to see children's children, a large number of grandchildren, was still a greater glory; and especially, as Jarchi observes, when these children, or children's children, were walking in a good way, in the good ways of religion and godliness, they trained them up in.

recently ran an article with the headline "If Drivers Buckle Up, Children Do, StudyFinds." The study, conducted by the Air Bag Safety Campaign, reported that "The evidence is clear: toget children buckled up, we must get drivers buckled up." Seat-belt use studies from more than 10 statesshowed that "more than 80 percent of children were buckled in when their adults used their seat belts. But when parents were not buckled up, restraint use for younger children ranged from 11 percent to 56percent." Within the family, there are three key processes by which children learn character and morality:forming emotional attachments, being taught prosocial behavior, and learning respect for authority andcompliance with rules. All teaching of right and wrong begins with attachment--the warm, emotional tiethat children have with their parents. Children learn from and are influenced most by those persons whoare most meaningful to them, and the most meaningful adults are those to whom the child is emotionallyattached. If a child does not have a strong emotional attachment to a parent, the effectiveness of theparent as a teacher and moral guide is greatly diminished. As social psychologist Willard W. Hartup hasconcluded, "A child's effectiveness in dealing with the social world emerges largely from experience inclose relationships."

Today, much of modern society is beginning to revert to the earlier preindustrial pattern. Whilelife is far more secure economically and medically for most children than ever before, and childrearingmethods have grown increasingly less punitive and authoritarian, many aspects of the domestic scenehave grown worse for children. With the incursions of advertising and the organized entertainmentindustry, and the often sex and violence-saturated popular culture they are driving, childhood is no longerthe relatively protected period that it has been in recent centuries. Children are thrust into an adult cultureat an early age, just as they once were in the older era.
